Canadian Immigration Success Stories
Fiona Barton
Immigrated to Canada in 1999 from Scotland. She currently makes her home in Kelowna, B.C with her husband and her son. She runs her own design consulting firm giving advice to local developers and her firm has expanded to employ 5 other full time staff. (Schaad; May 15, 2012)
Yves Kimbo
Immigrated to Canada from the Congo in 2002, he currently lives in Niverville, Manitoba. Yves first language is French but upon his arrival in Winnipeg it didn't provide him as much of an advantage as he thought it would. The Manitoba government provided him with fully paid for intensive English course due and to this it enabled him to integrate and succeed in Canadian Society. (Schaad; May 15, 2012)
Iryna Pavlova
Immigrated to Canada from the Ukraine in 2001, she currently lives in Mississauga, Ontario. After graduating with a bachelor's degree in English literature with three years previous experience in ESL teaching she applied to immigrate. Her first application was denied because she didn't have the required 3 years work experience. So she worked for 3 years before reapplying, in the fall of 2000 she was granted her immigration visa; "It was the happiest day of my life" she said. (Schaad; May 15, 2012)
Brima Mohammed
Brima Mohammed is a political refugee from Muglad, Sudan. He fled Sudan in 2001 where he spent five years in Egypt waiting for his immigration application to be processed. He was able to set up a private sponsorship through the Canadian government’s Private Sponsorship of Refugees program with a friend living in Alberta. In 2006, he moved to Alberta. Brima previously had a Bachelor degree accounting, which was acquired in Sudan. “Brima had his education credentials from Sudan assessed through the Alberta government's International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) to see how they compared to provincial standards”. Brima is working on completing his English Program and then plans on enrolling in an accounting program to receive a Certified General Accountant Designation. In the mean time Brima is balancing school and his job as a security officer at the University of Alberta and is enjoying is very busy life in Alberta. (Government of Alberta; 2012)
Sameena Arif
Sameena Arif and her family moved to Canada in 2004, after divorcing her husband in Pakistan she was looking for a fresh start in a country where she could be an independent woman. With her Bachelor in Arts majoring in Education, she is currently working as an English teacher to adult immigrants. Sameena wanted a safe place where she could raise her children with a good education system, in Pakistan Sameena often felt uneasy and worried about the safety of her children. Calgary was the perfect place for her to settle down and remake herself in a new country. (Government of Alberta; 2012)
Stanley Manjarres
Stanley and his family decided to move to Calgary in 2007 after hearing about many employment opportunities as an engineer. Through the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society Stanley enrolled in a technology upgrading program and English courses. After completing these courses in March 2008 he was offered a position at Suncor Energy. With the help of a supportive family and the many services the Canadian Government offers to help immigrants Stanley made a successful transition from Venezuela to Canada.
